About Gyna

Gyna Machelle Bivens

Gyna M. Bivens was sworn in to represent Fort Worth City Council District 5 on July 9, 2013.  Her council district covers more than 28,000 acres and is home to several major corporations.  A newcomer to politics, Bivens won the election with 57% of the vote.
She is President and Executive Director of North Texas LEAD which is a non-profit that connects senior level job-seekers with fee-paying employers.  Nearly 700 LEAD candidates have found employment as engineers, attorneys, financial professionals, human resources experts and many other professions after successfully navigating LEAD’s unique process.
Bivens’ professional background includes serving as a corporate spokesperson and local government liaison for TXU/Lone Star Gas (Oncor Electric Delivery).  Her  formal training is in broadcast journalism.  She has been a television news reporter for Lubbock’s KCBD-TV and KMOL-TV (San Antonio) where many of her reports were aired on network news.   She also worked at KRLD-AM, KKDA-AM, and KBOX/KMEZ Radio and ran the Fort Worth bureau of FOX 4 News.

Bivens was also appointed to the position of Public Information Manager for the City of San Antonio where she served for four years.  It was in the 1980’s during a Texas Municipal League of Cities conference that she introduced the city’s cablevision show “Call City Hall” to other municipal public information officers.  Until then, most cities used their cable access channels to simply run listings of city meetings (without the use of video).

Gyna has served on more than 30 municipal and civic boards and commissions and is an avid gardener growing melons, carrots, tomatoes and foot-long cucumbers.
