Campaign Focus: Continue the Fight Against Blight

Bivens has been aggressively fighting blight in her district by targeting sales of foreclosed properties to good community stewards and demolishing unsafe unsightly structures.

Demolitions per fiscal year:
• 2014 – 2015
15 to date
• 2013 – 2014
• 2012 2013
• 2011 2012

The District 5 Councilwoman says developers will look away if it appears community leaders aren’t interested in attracting economic development.

Campaign Focus: Revitalization throughout District 5

Bivens supports the continued development of Trinity Lakes. She is convinced once all the new homes are built, District 5 will be the prime location for a Signature Grocery Store.

She gained unanimous support from City Council members to incorporate the Cavile Revitalization Plan into the City’s Comprehensive Plan. As Fort Worth Housing Authority officials secure funding, Bivens is working with developers who have interest in being a part of this historic development. The Cavile Revitalization Zone covers 400 acres and will included mixed income housing, retail supportive services and will change the face of the Stop Six community. The 1954 public housing community will be demolished and replaced with new housing, apartments, townhomes and single family housing.

Campaign Focus: Attract Services That Enhance Lives of Senior Citizens

All three of the District’s Community Recreation Centers will see improvements as result of the 2013 Bond Package. Gyna encoueaged seniors to have their say as the bond package was being developed. Their voice was heard. Expansion is planned for Eugene McCray Recreation Center and the Handley Meadowbrook Recreation Center. A new floor in the gymnasium of the Martin Luther King Center is already in place and ballpark lighting will be installed.

Campaign Focus: Support Neighborhoods

Gyna continues to raise public awareness of selling foreclosed properties. A standing room only meeting introduced members of the clergy to the concept of expanding their footprint by acquiring foreclosed properties. This puts tax dollars back on the tax rolls and ensures a neighborhood friendly entity takes over the property.

Campaign Focus: Increase parkland in District 5.

After a national study showed District 5 to be the most underserved district for park services, Gyna set out on a mission to change that.
